Component one - The Radio Industry
L.O: to explore the content and structure of the unit.
Public service broad caster- Any broadcasting regime with the ideal of giving priority to the interests of the general public rather than commercial interests.
Commercial radio- Commercial radio stations make money by selling advertising. Having a large listening audience leads to more advertisers.
Community radio- Community radio stations are operated, owned and influenced by the communities they serve. They are generally nonprofit and provide a mechanism for enabling individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own stories, to share experiences and, in a media-rich world, to become creators and contributors of media.
Podcast- A podcast is a digital medium consisting of audio (or video) episodes that relate to a specific theme.
DAB radio- uses digital technology to distribute radio stations (digital audio broadcasting).
RAJAR- Radio Joint Audience Research , operates a single audience measurement system for the radio industry in the United Kingdom, measures radio audiences for the UK.
License fee- A hypothecated tax to fund public broadcasting.
Royal charter- The constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the BBC's Object, Mission and Public Purposes. The Charter also outlines the Corporation's governance and regulatory arrangements, including the role and composition of the BBC Board.
Remit- Outlines a broadcasters area of responsibilities.
Convergence- the process by which multiple media technologies are brought together in one computerised device.
In the UK, radio falls into 3 categories: public service, commercial and community radio.
1. Radio 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 live and music. It is open to all cultures in the UK. There is something for everyone.
2. "act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain".
3. £169.50, whoever is listening.
4. A wide variety of speech-related programming, including news, drama, ,comedy, science and history.

Radio
- Digital technology allows media organisations to offer audiences many ways to experience a programme in addition to listening on the radio:
- streaming live
- listening again via catch- up service
- downloading a podcast
- podcasts are now regularly produces by radio broadcasters, offering the chance to download a programme
- many offer additional content or edited highlights from the original programme
- increasingly, podcasts are produced independently of a radio broadcaster: these include drama series, comedies and factual shows.
Statistics from RAJAR in 2023:
- 88% of the UK's adult population or 49.5 million people listened to the radio each week.
- commercial radio's share of listening was 54.1, up from 50.9% in 2022.
- 17% of total listening was on smart speakers, a 22% increase from the previous year.
- total combined listening is 72% of all radio listening. This is predominantly DAB which is 42.7% and 25.6% online.

The archers
L.O: to explore the context and productions of radio drama.
- The Archers is the worlds longest running radio soap opera.
- broadcast since 1951, it was famously billed as 'an everyday story of country folk' and is now promoted as 'a contemporary drama in a rural setting'.
- one of the original intentions of the programme was to communicate information about modern farming methods to increase food production, as food was still being rationed after WW2.
- set in the fictional village called Ambleside
Soap opera conventions:
drama, big families, big friend groups, one particular person who is hated by the whole community, suspense, melodramatic characters, fast pace, open ending narrative ( always left on a cliffhanger), multi strand narrative, target audience for soap operas are women so often include matriarchs (strong women), often relationship stories, drama comes out when there is conflict between characters.
BBC radio 4, BBC radio 4 extras, catch up, ITV demand, Spotify, apple podcasts, repeated on Sundays.
The listening options offer flexibility to a wide target as it has many different types of devices that it can be on, it is also catch up and demand which means you can watch it from anytime. Also, it can be streamed internationally from anywhere in the world and is easy to access every Sunday on the BBC radio makes it accessible to all age groups. Having it on Spotify means that younger generations are more likely to se it and want to watch it increasing the audience.

- the archers is aired on BBC 4, the BBC's main spoken channel.
- this means it is funded by the license fee.
- although the show was once made to educate farmers, it now does this as well as focus on entertaining the audience.
- the archers has approximately 5 million listeners as well as an extra 1 million online listeners
Target audience for the archers: was housewives in the old days as they would have the time to listen to it in their day, still older women who live in the countryside or rural areas. Female 76%, 55+, middle upper class, white British 81%, right wing, conservative.

There are many reasons why The Archers is popular. Firstly because, it streams on a popular radio station BBC radio 4 where it is played every day (except Saturday) at 7pm and at 2pm the following day repeating the episode, it is also streamed online. This means that many people are able to listen to it. As it is a soap opera it usually is left on a cliffhanger which means ore people want to keep watching which is why it still remains as popular as it is.

Controversies-
affairs, armed robberies, rape, female vicars, gay marriages, slavery.
-listeners are eavesdropping in on characters conversations
- melodramatic but very real situations and storylines
- for many listeners the archers is like an old familiar friend, it is comforting
- however, many people are saying that it is becoming too melodramatic and is becoming too much like a soap.
- the new storyline has attracted a lot of new listeners which is a reason for the storyline to keep becoming melodramatic
- some of the listeners are global
- crucial way for British people living abroad to get a sense of British life
- rural listeners like the sense of farmer aesthetics
Uses and Gratifications examples
personal identity- listening to certain characters may help people find their personal identity as they may relate to these characters and feel a sense of belonging when listening to them.
information- some people may get information about farming whilst watching the archers or possible get information about other things they didn't know about.
entertainment- people may become entertained by the melodramatic storylines and become entertained by the characters, watchers may also enjoy the escapism they get by listening to the archers.
social interaction- some storylines have ways that people may relate to and get people talking, also social media can connect people who enjoy watching the archers.
