DVD front cover
- The main image on both the front covers are the horror movies villains and are medium shots of them so that we can see their facial expressions to get an idea of their personalities before watching the movies. They are being represented as evil and diabolical.
- The title for the dvd covers are near to the bottom of the cover in serif font and red font colour to give a simple and mysterious.
- The tagline for 'The Black Phone' is "never talk to strangers" this gives the watcher an idea that the film may have something to do with kidnapping and have a dark story. Whilst the tagline for 'drag me to hell' is "Christine Brown has a great job a great boyfriend, and a bright future. But in 3 days she's going to hell" this tagline tells us the story in a simple sentence so that the watcher understands what the movie will be about before they buy it.
- The colour palette that has been used is red/black. The black has connotations to night-time and darkness whilst the red has connotations to blood and death.
- The dvd's have information about the producers, the main actors and creators of the movie.
- There is one type of font on both covers although the black phone has sans serif on a bit of their front cover, the font is all in red or black/ any dark colours.
- The genre is shown through the colour palette and the facial expression on the actors in the shots used.
DVD back cover
- The main images are both the villains and the main characters in the film along with a few shots from the scenes.
- There are two thumbnails and they both show the violence from the films.
- The images suggest that the narrative of the film is dark and gory.
- Enigmas are created to hook the audience buy describing little parts of the film so that whoever is reading it has to buy the movie so that they can see what else happens.
- The blurb gives a simple story about the film and what to expect it includes some of the characters names so that the watcher gets a small idea about the film and characters before buying the dvd. It communicates the genre by giving the audience suspense whilst reading it for example the "drag me to hell" dvd blurb gives a little bit of backstory about the main character and what is going to happen to her further on in the movie but not all the details, this will giver the audience a feeling of suspense and make them invested on finding out what happens. It will immediately give the watcher the idea that the film is horror.
- The colour palette used on both the back covers of the movies is a dark red/black theme which has connotations to blood and death it also links to stereotypically hell. This has been used as it is a horror film so using pink and blue wouldn't have the same effect.
- Other information includes a few shots from some scenes on both backs of the dvd's, on both back covers they have the shots from the scenes on the middle/lower part of the poster.
- They predominantly have the same serif front although the title if the films both have sans serif to give an older and more haunting look to the film.
- All the characters are represented as vulnerable, in the "drag me to hell" back cover the watcher can see that the women is stereotypically being represented as the damsel in distress but the blurb explains that she is the main character.
Homework
Users visit the NTTD website to find information about the movie and its production. One reason that users visit the website is so that they can receive information about the film, the actors, the producers, the mise-en-scene and the filming locations so that they can have a better idea of what the film is going to be about . Similarly, another reason that users look at the website is for entertainment. For example, the user may want to see trailers about the film and try to find merchandise if they were a fan of the film. Another reason is so that they can connect with other fans via the films social media’s which are on their website.
Films use technology to reach audiences and promote the film . One way that producers of films use technology to promote and reach the audiences of the film is by using cgi to make the film more watchable and entertaining for the audience making more people want to watch the film. The NTTD movie used cgi in many of their scenes to create the best experience possible for their watchers. In contrast, another way that they do this is by having sponsors who help to promote the film in return they have their products in films and in the trailers. For example in NTTD Nokia is promoted a lot through out the film not only helping to improve the brands name but also the films as the James Bond film participated in a Nokia advert which promoted the film.

List of genre conventions expected in a horror movie:
imagery- dark and gloomy imagery for example thunder storms and empty, dingy buildings.
colour palette- stereotypical horror film colour palettes like deep red colours which have connotations to blood. Dim colours for the backgrounds which helps contrasts the characters as they usually wear bright and vibrant colours although the villain/monster would stereotypically wear dark clothes instead to blend in with the horror aesthetic and juxtapose with the other characters.
typography- the letters are all in capitals to connote that it is an aggressive or violent film as the capitals in a crimson red colour imply that the title is 'screaming bloody murder'
characters- facial expressions look scared and vulnerable, usually a group of friends or family, all have different personality's which suit the way their characters dress and act.
narrative- normal people living a stereotypically normal life usually fairly wealthy, people start getting killed and a group of friends decide to investigate. Quite often one of the friends get killed by the murderer whilst saving the other or sacrifice themselves to catch the murderer. At the end all of the people go back to the normal humdrum lives.
representations of people- vulnerable group of friends (the funny one, the brave one, the vulnerable one and the two lovers). The villain is usually an older and stereotypically male.

primary is the original research straight from an interview, survey or experiment, secondary is second hand like from websites, journals or books.
Main theatrical poster
- The main image for the "black phone" poster is the murderer and kidnapper and a close up of him has been used to represent them intimidating. For the "Drag me to hell" poster the women who is being targeted and cursed is the main image with something dragging her down, they have used a mid shot for her so that we can see the hands dragging her down and because she is being represented as 'vulnerable'
- They are both lai out with the main image in the centre of the poster with the title and credits in the bottom centre of the poster. At the top of the poster the director of the movie for the black phone has been put at the very top of the poster, whilst the drag me to hell directors have been placed just above the title.
- There are no logos on the drag me to hell poster although on the black phone poster there is a small logo in the bottom left of the poster which is the studios logo.
- The title for both the film posters are on the centre at the bottom of the posters and the font used for the black phone is sans serif whilst the font used on the drag me to hell poster is serif.
- Other information on the poster includes information and credits underneath the title of the main actors.
- The colour palette used is darl colours but predominately red because of the connotations to blood and darkness as it is a horror film poster.
- The black phone poster has used sans serif for everything including the title which is the biggest as it is the most important part its also newer film with a lot of aggressive scenes, however drag me to hell uses serif as its an older film and with a more historical and religious background and context.
Overall
- The genre conventions for my specific genre are: chase scenes with the villain/monster, scenes with the main character fighting for their life, a backstory to the villain/monster, supposed. happy ending for the main character the cliffhanger.
- Ideology being presented is that the main characters plan to catch the monster/villain whilst it tries to kill the main characters.
- The people or places being represented are the killer, the main characters and their personalities and traits and where all the chasing and main scenes happen.
- The target is people 15+ because it involves people around their age and a lot of suspense.
Research Genre codes and conventions
- The representations as a whole in 3-5 adjectives: Diabolical, gory, dingy, violent, suspenseful.
- Gender has been represented as men being stereotypically independent, powerful and strong whilst women are made stereotypically vulnerable, as the 'wife' and emotional. This has been constructed by the women being in trouble or a 'damsel in distress' and the man saving them although in newer and modern horror films this has changed.
- Age has been represented by using usually a teen friend group with ages ranging from 13-17 or a family with a range of ages. This has been done so that the older person in the friend group saves the younger person or the parents save the children in the family version.
- In older films from the very early1900s ethnicity was represented as predominantly white, although in modern films all ethnicities are represented equally.
- Horror is represented as usually quite gory and scary with a lot of tension and suspense. This is done with attacks and chase scenes.
- Stereotypes of horror that are used repeatedly are: Women being a 'damsel in distress', the villain/monster/murderer being fairly old or some one the main character know well, set in an old fashioned southern American town or the suburbs.

My DVD cover and poster
- The genre I have chosen is horror because it can have main character that are similar ages to the audience making it more appealing to watch for them and the character emotions more relatable.
- The target audiences interests shouldn't affect whether they want to watch it or not although if they are similar ages with similar interests to the characters they may feel more obliged to watch it.
- Three possible names for my film: "watch the water" "camp death" " lakeside murder "
- The film we be about a group of teens that go camping next to a lake for the weekend, the lake is vast and hides many secrets. They think they're the only ones camping there until they find a very old camper that looks abandoned at least thats what they think until things start going missing including one two of their friends. One of the friends are found and are no longer alive but they still have to find the other friend. The groups of friends need to find their missing friend with out being caught by the kidnapping murderer. This will appeal to the audience as it is people their age, they are also camping which may be familiar to the audience.
- Possible taglines: " do you ever feel like your not alone even when no ones around?" as the friend group believe that they are alone by the lake they soon find out later that they are not.
- The poster will have a dark and eery theme.
- The colour palette will be red/black/grey
- The main image will be of the main character in the place where the majority of action happens
- The poster will have the title, actors names, directors name and tagline
- The style on the dvd cover is going to be old fashioned and rustic and will have an eery effect
- The dvd back cover is going to have images from certain scenes and another picture of the main character it will also have a blurb
- The dvd cover will have information like the actors the directors name the companies name a title and a tagline.
- The spine will have the title the studio name and an age rating.
