Introduction to media representations

L/O: To explore the concept of representations & stereotypes.

representation-

The media offers the audience an interpretation of the world.

It is a RE PRESENTATION of the events, people and places.

The representation is positive because the text states 'superhuman' which is saying that people with disabilities can do sports even at a disadvantage.

-powerful, strong, athletic.

-They gave them geeky clothes (shirts tucked, round glasses)

-Based on different subjects
-Different star vehicles
-Different colour palettes
-Different mastheads
-Different shot types

Gender has been represented very stereotypically in these two magazines. For example Cosmopolitan has used female colours like pink and purple whilst GQ has used male colours like different shades of blue. Carrie Underwood is wearing a flowery dress and she is looking very happy although David Beckham is looking more professional wearing a tuxedo and his hand placement. They have stereotypical jobs as David is a footballer and Carrie is a singer.

- They have done opposite stereotypes
-Cosmopolitan has used female colours on a male whilst GQ has used male colours on a female
-The description is the opposite of stereotypical.

Exam style magazine question
L.O:  To write and structure an effective exam style question.

The two covers are represented very differently. Cosmopolitan represents Tom Daley in an anti-stereotypically way, for example he has been dressed in more feminine clothing both in colour and style. However as a gay man, this is more stereotypically. On the other hand there are more stereotypically masculine representations with the tattoo and the muscular physique.

Both covers are represented very differently. GQ represents Rihanna in an anti-stereotypically way, the reader can see this because of the sexual objectification of cover star because she is topless which is stereotypically an action that only men do. Although she is dressed as a Greek goddess who is a woman. However the colour palette is stereotypically muted.

The representation in the two magazines are similar because both Tom Daley and Rihanna are being anti- stereotypically dressed. However the differences between them is that Tom would normally be stereotypically represented with his colour palette as he is a gay man whilst Rihanna is not gay.

Case study 1 Raheem Sterling
L.O:  to explore the context and cover star for case study 1.

We could compare these two covers using information from the previous slides by looking at the two cover stars because you can immediately see how David Beckham who is on the left is fully dressed unlike Jennifer Lopez who is on the right who is in a very revealing outfit. Also Jennifer has a full body shot is different to David who just has a close up of his face. The text around them both is also very different to each other.

GQ targets its audience by using male preferences because it targets males from the age of 30 to around 45. They have done this by using stereotypically male attractions and also by using male cover stars and cover stars that males would like and also text that would appeal that target audience.

GQ represents gender by making males the main subject and women a side subject.

GQ has used a close up of Liam Gallagher and a black, grey and beige colour palette.

Raheem Sterling MBE is an English professional footballer who plays as a winger and attacking midfielder for Premier League club Manchester city and the England national team. Born in Jamaica to Jamaican parents, sterling moved to London at the age of 5.
Sterling was the fifth youngest player to represent England when he played against Sweden in 2012. 2016, Sterling was the most expensive player when he was bought by Manchester City.
In 2018 whilst playing against Chelsea Sterling was subjected to racist taunts from Chelsea fans. Sterling believes that the comments were from online.

Sterling was a victim of racial issues in his football career in 2018 when he was in a match against Chelsea and had racial taunts shouted at him by Chelsea fans. In December of 2018 after the match Sterling spoke up about his experience and try to spread awareness on racial equality for black footballers.

Sterling is wearing wings to be like a guardian angel to other people who have suffered from racism. The title that says Guardian Angel is written in golden to be further seen as an angel.

-Wearing wings to represent that he is a guardian angel to those who have been subjected to racism.
-Gold font colour has connotations with leadership.
-Confident in showing off tattoos even though he was judged for them by the media.
-Colour black in colour palette to show his fight for racism.
-Black wings show equality with other things that aren't human like angels for example (going against stereotypes).
-Wealth shown through jewellery.

Exam Question
Explore how this front cover of GQ magazine uses media language to communicate meanings.
-images
-text/written language
-layout and design

This front cover of GQ magazine with Raheem Sterling as the cover star is being used to fight against racism in and outside of the football community. He is wearing black wings which is an unusual colour for wings because it represents equality and power. He is also wearing a lot of jewellery which represents his wealth and status, because in the past Raheem Sterling was subjected to racism when a newspaper article stated that it was unfair that he had bought is mother a house and that footballers were being payed too much. The wings are also a connotation for him being a guardian angel to people who may have also experienced racism towards them before.

Golden writing has also been used for the title and main cover to represent that Raheem is the leader and he can show other people the right way. The colour palette is also very dull which suggests that we should be looking mainly at Raheem's story. All of the text about Raheem is either in a bright colour or in golden so that we definitely make sure we look at him.

The shot type taken was a low angle shot to make him look powerful, the way he is posing also makes him seem very masculine. He is standing in a very powerful position to represent himself as being strong.

Malala Yousafzai
VOGUE
L.O:  To explore the context and cover stars for case study 2.

VOGUE is aimed at ABC1 fashion and style conscious women who are educated, wealthy and sophisticated.
Whilst it traditionally targeted an older female audience of 30-45 year olds, you could say that this audience has now broadened to appeal to, inspire and empower younger readers too.
VOGUE is a mainstream magazine, so it uses typical codes and conventions of print to construct the front cover.

Historically in magazines like VOGUE and others anyone that wasn't white was underrepresented until around 2017.

The Harry Styles magazine representing equality by a man not dressing stereotypically by wearing a dress. The Rihanna cover is representing racial equality. VOGUE targets their audience by using different genders and ethnicities. They are becoming more equal by using cover stars that. they. don't usually use.

5 facts about Malala:
-She was shot at the age of 15 the taliban because she went to school and took an exam.
-Malala fights for girls freedom and rights
-She now lives in Birmingham
-She is 26
-She graduated from Oxford University

Homework

Gender has been constructed quite similarly in these two covers, for example in the GQ one of Raheem Sterling is being represented as masculine, physically strong, wealthy and inspiring whilst the details magazine featuring Robert Patterson is being represented as masculine as well but in a different manner. For example the fact that he is in between a woman's legs tells us that he is being represented as powerful and wealthy. Gender has also been represented differently in these two covers because the cover of Raheem is a low angle long shot whilst he is shirtless and  wearing dark clothing and wings which makes him seem empowering and strong. The cover of Robert is a close up whilst he has a partly unbuttoned shirt and an unbuttoned jacket which gives the impression that he is not trying to look powerful but look serious or classy. Gender has been constructed by using dark colours to build up the foreshadowing of masculinity and power they are also both the main story's which makes them come across as important. On the cover lines it is pointing out their achievements.

Malala Yousafzai VOGUE
Case study 2
L.O: to explore the context and cover star for case study 2.
Malala is a 26 year old woman from Pakistan currently living in Birmingham UK. When she was 15 and coming home from school she was shot in the face by a taliban terrorist because thet found out that her and her father had a campaign that helped give young girls an education. She had to have a part of her skull removed to allow her skull to swell to save her. a few years after she had recovered she continued her campaign and her and her father created the Malala fund, she also won the Noble peace prize in 2014. VOGUE put her on one of their covers because she is an inspirational role model.

Cover analysis of Malala Yousfzai:
Main image
-The image is an eye level medium close up.
-Wearing red which connotes, strength, power and courage.
-Wearing jewellery to show feminism.
-Engaging eye contact with her which makes her appear as confident and strong.

Anchorage
-Colour palette is very bold because she is being different and strong
-The cover line with her name in it is in white on top of the red so that we look straight at who she is incase anyone doesn't know who she is.

Cover lines
-The text about her is in bold writing and cold colours to emphasise that she is the most important thing in the magazine.
-On the cover it says "surviver, activist, legend" because she is a survived being shot by the taliban and she gives other girls who were like her hope.

Layout
-The VOGUE heading is in front of her to anchor her to the image to let the reader know she belongs on this cover.
- Following a traditional design layout
-VOGUE are making sure the reader knows that Malala is the main news by making all the other texts smaller black fonts.

Three ways media language has been used to construct meaning on this cover:
-Red clothing to connote strength and power.
-Her head is behind the VOGUE title to show that she is apart of it as much as anyone else.
-Wearing jewellery to show her feminism.

L.O: To explore the representations in case study 2.

VOGUE magazine (before 2017) was quite diverse all across the board with gender, ethnicity, religion and culture, although now they have become more equal.

We can see that there is no diversity because the only other two people that are spoken about on the magazine cover are two black people Jordan Dunn and Anthony Joshua.
But they have also represented Malala as powerful and strong within the magazine.

Being female according to this cover is being:
- Strong
- Having a powerful mentality
- Dating people
- Fashion

These things aren't necessarily negative but are still stereotypically female's passions.
Malala is being represented as very feminine because of what she is wearing for example her red flowing head scarf, and her gold jewellery. Her makeup also connotes her feminism, she is being represented as a survivor and not a victim.

Gender and ethnicity have both been represented in this magazine cover as partly stereotypical. For example VOGUE has made the colour palette grey/black which is neutral but shows control. with Malala wearing crimson red clothes to connote her power and courage. She is also stereotypically representing feminism by wearing gold jewellery and makeup. VOGUE has done this so that we can see equality within the magazine.

Gender has been represented as powerful, feminist and inspiring.

L.O: to compare representations in magazine covers.

Similarities:
- Both wearing red to connote power
- The main cover lines are both in the same place and are white
- Direct address
- Both have text about being empowering because they are both empowering inspirational women.
- Both wearing jewellery to show wealth
- Both have their hands in similar positions so that we look straight at their faces and mainly focus on just their faces.
- Both are represented as stereotypically femininity

Differences:
- Lizzo low camera angle level whilst Malala is higher to make Lizzo look more powerful whist Malala looks serious
- Different types of text on Malala's cover than Lizzo's because both magazines are based on different topics.
- Long shot for Lizzo and medium shot for Malala so we can see her religion and Lizzos is about her looking powerful and feminist
- Lizzo is being. portrayed as more glamorous and highly styled compared to Malala

Homework
This front cover of VOGUE uses media language to communicate meaning by using a colour palette with a strong meaning, for example Malala's red clothing and the red background is connoting power and strength within the magazine cover. The masthead of the magazine is in front of Malala's head to show that she belongs on this cover. The title that says "survivor activist legend" which is telling that she is iconic and an inspiration to others. The title in which states her name Malala in white writing is telling the reader that she is the main story and the main focus of this whole magazine and that the reader is needing to take notice of Malala's story first. The cover lines are connoting her strength and power and making sure that no matter where the reader is looking they will mainly see text about Malala's power and strength.
