Music audiences
L.O: to explore music audience appeals and fandom

- music plays an important part in the lives of many people as if it is often tied in with identity
- particularly associated with youth culture as many people discover their music genre as teenagers
- many genres have developed over time
- different genres, especially those that are less mainstream

The star persona
- the image of an artist that we see in the media is a very carefully constructed representation designed to appeal to their target audience; it is not 'real'
this includes:
- music and lyrics
- visual imagery ( MV, publicity shots, album artwork)
- design of any artwork, website and merch
- social media posts
- the persona also embodies different values and beliefs too
- this can change and develop over time as artists grow older

star persona for Taylor Swift:
Taylor Swift is shown as caring for her audience and very supportive on social media. She is seen as a stereotypical American woman with the way that she posts and dresses. She is quite often seen posting supportive comments to her fans and other artists online. She is also presented as a feminist as seen when she posted on instagram saying that she supports Kamala Harris. Supposed to try and be like she is running the account when she most likely is not.

star persona for Stormzy:
Stormzy is presented online as being very grateful and full of gratitude. He also seen as being an inspiration to his fans when he posts tweets about supporting others. Stormzy is also presented as being 'real' when posting jokes on twitter. He is also known for supporting black lives matter. It is presented that he controls his own instagram.

Homework

How do music videos reflect the time in which they were made? Refer to Waterfalls (TLC, 1995) to support your points.   [10]

Music videos reflect the time in which they were released through mise-en-scene like the costumes and make up. For example the music videos reflect ‘waterfalls’ was made in 1995 which is made clear by the make up and clothing that the singers are wearing. This is because the clothes and make up style is 90’s. Also another way in which waterfalls depicts the time in which they were made is  through the editing and camera work. This is because the camera then and editing skills were not as advanced as they were then.

To continue, another way in which a music video reflects the time that it was made is through the style of music. For example, in ‘waterfall’ the music that TLC had created reflects the time the music video was made because that style of music was incredibly popular in the 90s
